Hi! Today I want to tell you about an amazing project: the wedding dress we made for Xenia, a sheer Met Gala–inspired gown embroidered with thousands of Swarovski crystals.

01The request

A Met Gala–inspired sheer wedding dress

Xenia came to me with references of a Met Gala dress. Quite a bold and extravagant brief:

  • A sheer dress in beige mesh on a corset
  • Embroidery with rhinestones and crystals
  • A choker and detachable rhinestone "curtain" sleeves

In a sheer wedding dress, the mesh is almost invisible, so the embroidery becomes the main design of the whole look.

02The corset

The corset under the mesh

We had enough time to make this dress, about 6 months. As soon as we received Xenia's measurements, we got straight to work.

The first task was to make the corset and to mark out the embroidery on the dress. A corset is the structured bodice that shapes the figure and holds the dress in place.

First crystals laid out on the beige corset on a dress form to plan the embroideryEmbroidery pattern on grid paper held against the corset, with crystal flowers marked down the centre

The dress is made of a single layer of sturdy mesh, strong enough to carry the embroidery, and several thousand Swarovski crystals in different sizes.

The construction of the dress wasn't complicated, so almost all of the work went into the embroidery.

Honestly, there isn't much more to tell: we simply spent half a year at the table embroidering this dress 🙂 We carefully sewed on every stone in a symmetrical pattern.

04The finishing touches

A crystal choker and rhinestone fringe

Then we made the choker separately and added a fringe of rhinestone chains to the dress.

This dress cost over $3,000. Custom dresses at Lutien Bridal start from €1,490, and the final price depends on how complex the design is.
